If you check out this review of Windows 7, you’ll see a lot of what I call “hooplah.” But the one thing that has me interested is the very last line of the article, the last bullet point: “Windows 7 needs less processing power than previous Windows versions.” If this is true – and to what extent – then Windows 7 has peaked my interest.

In my opinion an operating system really is a background type of software. It should be the “behind the scene’s guy” that doesn’t get enough attention or credit. Because let’s face it, nobody goes online just to get on their OS! “Hey, I gotta go use Windows.” Nope, haven’t heard that lately. But of course, everything I’m doing on the computer if I’m a Windows user is done there. So ideally my OS is the guy who works really hard in the background but never really gets the credit he deserves for how much his job is holding the show together.

But unfortunately for far too long Windows has been the guy who thinks the whole party is about him. Windows Aero? Really? You want me to get all excited about how my application windows have transparency and can be displayed in a scrolling, 3D, cool-looking but useless interface? And windows that “snap” into place and advanced support for touch devices? Great, but who cares?! That stuff should just be standard unheralded improvements in the computing industry. “Unheralded” being the key word.

But on the other hand if you come out with an OS that makes my computer much more efficient and increases my response time when juggling four open Photoshop documents, three Illustrator files, an InDesign file and several open HTML and CSS files in Dreamweaver – THAT is something to get excited about. I mean I’ll do a launch party for that! I’ll even pay money for that! But somehow it ended up on the last line of CNN’s article. Maybe I just don’t get it.

I’m not going to run out and buy Windows 7 because of that last line. But if that last line is confirmed by several reliable sources, I will consider the upgrade.
